#mydubai is for everyone and hopefully more than just a statement

In the past few days I have heard from multiple friends that they were called by EmiratesNBD letting them know that their accounts will be closed shortly, no reason was given but also not surprising as we have all faced such calls in the recent years, it is not based on my activity, personality, background or any of these features that define me as a human, NO! It is because of my nationality!

I have personally faced multiple hurdles in my life due to the fact that I was born in Iran; specifically once the sanctions were imposed. It does not matter what my qualifications are, my education, if I have lived most of my life abroad, if I agree or disagree with my government, who my parents are, the fact that I have 0 ties with any business or person in Iran, the fact that I have 0 criminal records, these really do not matter ... what matters is that I hold an Iranian passport.

When I tell my (non-Iranian) friends of the barriers we must pass in order to receive the simplest rights, something they take for granted and never even think twice about it is hard for them to even imagine the situation or for a second put themselves in our shoes.

I have become the black man who is denied riding the bus based on his color; you just need to replace a few keywords.

There is a hashtag that has been passed around for many months now #mydubai is not just a hashtag, it is a way of life, it is a lifestyle, Dubai is for all of us, every day we meet people from all over the world, from another environment, from another culture and background, but the beauty of #mydubai is that we are all one here, we admire the spread, appreciate and respect each other's cultures beyond the foundation of the governments and political figures that define our country at the time. We are building the city as the city is building who we are.

What a shame that there are those corporates and entities that are breaking the rules of #mydubai and preliminary judging me before knowing me, No! Not judging me but one step further, taking action and making a decision against me prior to knowing who I am far beyond the booklet I hold in hand.
